The Relaunch Journal 04: When a Candle Doesn’t Burn Perfectly at First

One of the hardest things about candle testing is resisting the urge to judge a candle too quickly.

You light it, watch the wax begin to melt and immediately start looking for that perfectly clean edge.

But I’m learning — and relearning — that the first few hours don’t tell the whole story.

Let’s Talk About Wax Hang-Up

Wax hang-up is the wax that remains on the sides of the vessel after a burn cycle.

At first glance, it can look like the wick isn’t strong enough. But during the early burn cycles, some hang-up can be normal. As the candle burns farther down, more heat is retained inside the vessel and wax left from earlier burns may begin to melt away.

That means I’m not choosing a wick simply because it creates a completely clean melt pool during the first burn.

A wick that looks powerful at the top can become too aggressive later in the candle. That can mean a larger flame, faster wax consumption or more soot.

The goal is not perfection at hour four. The goal is a controlled candle through its full life.

What I Watch During Every Test

MY BURN-TEST NOTES INCLUDE

• Flame height and stability

• Any visible soot or smoke

• How quickly the wax is being consumed

• Melt-pool development

• Wax remaining on the sides

• Wick behavior as the candle burns deeper

• Hot throw and how the fragrance fills the space

I also weigh the candle between burn cycles. That gives me another piece of information: the burn rate.

Looking at all of these things together gives me a much better picture than simply asking, “Did all the wax melt to the edge?”

Why I Keep Going

Testing can be frustrating because sometimes the candle that looks best in one burn doesn’t look best in the next.

But that’s exactly why I keep going.

I want to know what happens halfway down the jar. I want to know what the flame looks like near the bottom. I want to know whether the hot throw stays beautiful and whether the wick remains controlled as more heat builds inside the vessel.

So when you eventually receive one of our new candles, you may never see all of these test burns.

But they’re part of the candle you’ll light.

Every bit of wax left on the side, every gram recorded and every wick I decide not to use is helping me get closer to the candle I want Flame2scent Candle Co. to put into your home.
